Kampala University Don Honoured with National Independence Jubilee Medal

Nakapiripirit, Uganda – May 1, 2025 — Mr. Solomon Ochwo Oburu, a distinguished senior lecturer at Kampala University, has been awarded the prestigious National Independence Jubilee Medal in recognition of his outstanding contributions to national development and transformation. The medal was conferred upon him today by the President of the Republic of Uganda, H.E. Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, during the International Labour Day celebrations held at Nakaale Grounds in Nakapiripirit District.

Mr. Oburu, a doctoral candidate and senior academic in the Department of History at Kampala University, has had a remarkable career spanning both the education and public service sectors. His scholarly work, creative writing, and research have earned him wide recognition within academic circles and beyond.

From 1997 to 2006, Mr. Oburu served as the Second National Vice-Chairperson of the Uganda National Teachers Union (UNATU), where he played a pivotal role in championing the rights and welfare of teachers across the country. Prior to that, he served as both a secondary school headteacher and a primary school teacher, impacting countless students in various schools throughout Uganda.

Mr. Oburu’s leadership has extended beyond the classroom. His numerous appointments and community engagements in his home district – Tororo and at national and international levels have left a lasting legacy on those he has served.

The National Independence Jubilee Medal is one of the highest civilian honours awarded to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to Uganda’s progress. Mr. Oburu's recognition today is a confirmation of a lifetime commitment to education, leadership, and national service.
