Kampala University Marks 26 Years of Sporting Excellence with Glamorous Celebration

Ggaba, 5th June 2025, Kampala University was filled with glamour, joy, and pride as the institution celebrated 26 years of sports excellence in a colourful dinner event held at the Main Campus in Ggaba. The spectacular celebration, themed “Celebrating 26 Years of Sporting Excellence,” honoured the university’s rich sporting history and recognised outstanding individuals who have flown the university flag high since its inception in 1999.

The beautifully decorated and illuminated event drew stakeholders, alumni, sports icons, and university leadership in a night of reflection, appreciation, and inspiration.

In his keynote address, Owek. Amb. Al-Haj Prof. Badru Kateregga, the Founding Vice-Chancellor and chief sponsor of sports at the university, recounted the remarkable journey of Kampala University in sports over the past two and a half decades.

“Since our inception in 1999, Kampala University has consistently participated and excelled in various sporting disciplines both locally and internationally,” Prof. Kateregga stated. “From early victories in handball and netball in 2005 to winning the University League UTL Cup in 2007 against Makerere University and the MTN Cup in 2008 against Nkumba University, our record speaks volumes.”

He highlighted major milestones, including 2011: Champions in handball (men), badminton (men and women), football, and athletics at the NUSFU Inter-University Games. 2013: A landmark year with sweeping victories at the East Africa University Games in Dar es Salaam,football (men and women), handball, basketball, taekwondo, emerging overall champions, 2016: Victory at the EAUG held at JKUAT, Kenya, including a historic football win against the University of Zanzibar, 2018–2024: Continued dominance across disciplines including netball, basketball, handball, woodball, athletics, karate, and chess, with multiple trophies from national and regional tournaments such as FUBA Division 1, EAUG, UFL, and Kyambogo Open Championships.

Prof. Kateregga extended special congratulations to the Men’s Netball Team “The Rock” for their consistent excellence, most recently clinching the East African title. “Their devotion and skill have seen them become a force in the region,” he noted.

The evening also featured awards to distinguished sports alumni and staff for their outstanding contributions to the university’s sporting legacy. Honorees included celebrated athletes like  Halima Nakayi, Winnie Nannyondo, David Emong,  Muzamir Mutyaba, Titus Tugume, Shaque Mubiru, Ssebwato Nicholas, Shafiq Kagimu, Steven Mukwala, Abbey Etrude, Faisal Mubiru, Coach Vicent Tumusiime, Coach Kalyesubura Micheal, Viane Ssekajugo, Bagala Margret, Faridah Kadondi, Nicholas Kabonge, Sarah Nakiyunga, Ibrahim Kongo, Patrick Okello, Said Mayanja, Irene Eyaru, Wannume Gilbert, Coach Jessy, Coach Maseruka Joseph, Coach Ssemujju, Mr.Mugalu Augustine, Mr.Kamoga Ronald, Mr.Shakool Wahab, Ms.Martha Soigi

The function was presided over by Rev. Can. Dr. Duncans Mugumya, Commissioner for Physical Education at the Ministry of Education and Sports, who commended Kampala University and Prof. Kateregga for the strong support towards youth talent development through sports.
“Kampala University has become an inspiration for nurturing sporting talent in Uganda and beyond. We applaud your commitment and investment in empowering young men and women,” Rev. Mugumya remarked.

The celebration was also graced by dignitaries including, Mr. Edgar Watson- CEO of FUFA, Ms. Peninnah Kabenge- AUUS President, Dr.Sarah Nkonge Muwonge, Dr.Mufti Muhammad Kaliisa, Counsel Fredrick Muwema, Counsel Ssebandeke, Ms. Joselyn Ucanda- President Uganda Netball Federation, Ms. Annie Nankya of NCS

From within the university, attendees included the Chairperson Board of Trustees/Resident Director Ms. Rashidah Kateregga, Mr. Faquih Kateregga, Ms. Sarah Kateregga, DVC Dr. Wardah Rajab M. Gyagenda, Consultant Mr. Kamoga Ronald, University Administrator Ms. Naila Florence, HRM/PA to VC Ms. Carol, AR Segawa Hamza, Deputy AR Ms. Bamussima Winnie, and Mr. Shakool Wahab, among others.

As Kampala University marks this significant milestone, the celebration reaffirms its commitment to excellence in sports and the holistic development of its students. The future, as the Vice-Chancellor emphasised, remains bright with even greater triumphs on the horizon.
