H.E. Daniel Makoul Awan Sworn In As The 22nd Guild President of Kampala University
On Thursday, October 3, 2024, the grand gardens of Ggaba Main Campus were buzzing with anticipation as students gathered for the swearing-in ceremony of the new Guild Council. At the center of the gardens stood a podium, where soon, a new generation of leaders would pledge to serve their fellow students.
Among the crowd sat a nervous group of newly elected Guild council members. For some, this was their first step into leadership. For others, it was a continuation of a journey they had begun long ago. Each of them carried hopes, dreams, and the weight of responsibility on their shoulders.
Here comes the moment everyone had been waiting for- the swearing-in. One by one, the new council members stood and took the oath, promising to uphold the values of the guild, to serve the university with integrity, to obey the Vice-Chancellor and to always prioritise the welfare of the students. As each member recited the words, they felt a surge of pride. They were no longer just students—they were leaders, entrusted with the responsibility to make a real impact.
H.E. Daniel Makoul Awan, pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Procurement and Logistics Management and South Sudanese by Nationality, was sworn in as the new Guild President, Rt. Hon. Isaac Nahurira as Prime Minister, and their Excellences, the Vice-Guild Presidents of the different KU Campuses, were also sworn in to take on the mantle; i.e., H.E. Nakazibwe Lydia for Masaka Campus, H.E. Mukuchami Joel for Luweero Campus, H.E Sabiiti Gibert for Mutundwe Campus will be swearing in soon, and that of Jinja Campus will swear in soon after the pending petition that was logged in by Mr. Mutunde Keneth’s opponents who are challenging his victory.
After the swearing-in, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academics, Research, Innovations, and Internationalisation, Dr. Wardah Rajab M. Gyagenda addressed the gathering. Her words were both a challenge and an inspiration. "This council," She said, "is the heart of our student body. You will be tested, and you will face challenges, but remember: that leadership is about resilience, empathy, and action. You are the torchbearers of tomorrow, and the choices you make will shape not only this institution but the lives of those who come after you."
She encouraged the new leaders to serve their Institution honestly and selflessly. She thanked H.E Esther Florance Namale (now retired Guild President) and her Cabinet for a job well done.
The function was graced by the University Human Resource Manager, Mrs. Flora Rukundo Ddamba, Mr. Mugalu Augustine, the Dean of Students, and Mr. Muhanuzi, the Deputy Dean of Students, Luweero Campus.
As the ceremony came to a close, the newly sworn-in council members felt a renewed sense of purpose. They looked at one another, knowing that the road ahead would not always be easy, but also knowing they had each other for support.
