Beyond Campus: Kampala University Students Sharpen Newsroom Skills at MCI
Kampala University (KU) Journalism and Mass Communication students visited the Media Challenge Initiative (MCI) Media Hub in Kabalagala on 18 September for hands-on studio production and teleprompter training ahead of the upcoming Africa Newsroom Contest.
Led by Ms. Shamie Ssekatawa, Manager of KU FM, the students gained practical exposure to modern broadcast tools, strengthening their preparation for the contest and their future careers in journalism.
The engagement focused on practical storytelling, live reporting and broadcast presentation, connecting classroom learning with experience in a professional media environment. It offered students an opportunity to sharpen their delivery, build confidence and appreciate the coordination required in studio production.
Although Kampala University has its own radio station, 99.2 KU FM, and the Kampala Film School, the institution continues to pursue external learning opportunities that broaden students’ experience. The MCI visit reflects this commitment to enriching training through exposure to different facilities, professional practices and industry perspectives.
By combining campus-based training with engagements such as this, Kampala University is helping aspiring journalists develop the versatility and practical competence needed in today’s media industry.
The visit provided valuable preparation for the Africa Newsroom Contest while reinforcing the University’s commitment to producing confident communicators and skilled storytellers.
