DVC Flags Off Kampala University Teams To UCU For The 2023 Inter-University Games
Kampala University has been flagged off today, Saturday by the Varsity’s Deputy Vice Chancellor Dr. Wardah M. Gyagenda.
DVC flagged off a contingent of 142 that is going to compete in nine sports disciplines.
Dr. Wardah revealed that it’s in their norm to send off their students to games with prayers such that they go and come back in peace and with medals.
“Today we are flagging off our teams for all the different games to go to UCU for University games, it’s the culture of Kampala University to flag off our students with prayers, we remind them that in addition to sports, there are also manners, so we remind you to go in peace and come back in peace.” She said.
Kampala University came into existence on 16th February 1999 and next year will be making 25 years( Silver jubilee) in the field of Education and Sports, DVC asserted that they are using this year’s AUUS Inter University games as one of the activities leading to their celebrations come next year.
So we are very hopeful, very excited and we cannot wait to get the numerous trophies as it has been the case before.” Says DVC
The University’s sports Tutor, Martha Soigi took the same direction as her boss, she has also promised medals.
“We’re going to feature in nine disciplines, hopefully, we are expecting to get gold medals like we have been doing, I have a contingent of 142, and among those 121 are athletes, so I thank our Prof. Badru D Kateregga and Mrs.Jolly for injecting in money for the athletes to get a chance to play.” Says Martha Soigi,
“We’re well prepared for University games, both boys and girls have been in serious training, we did a lot of preps, we are going to compete not to participate, and we shall get medals.” Says Ategeka Fred Akiki, Captain boys teams.
“First of all I want to thank our Professor and his Staff for this opportunity given to us, most of our disciplines are going, and we are so happy about this, I am here to let you know that Kampala University is ready to compete, so far we have the best teams and I promise you we are going to win trophies.” Overall captain of girls' teams, Shakirah Nassaka.
The last edition in 2019 at the University of Kisubi, Kampala University won four medals.
This season they’re featuring in football (boys and girls), Netball, basketball, volleyball, darts, swimming, and handball (boys and girls).
The tournament officially starts on Sunday at UCU Mukono Campus.
