Kampala University Chess Stars Excel at Rwabushenyi Memorial Championship
Kampala University students demonstrated notable talent at the prestigious Rwabushenyi Memorial National Chess Championship held at SOM Arena, Makindye, from 20th to 23rd November 2025. The event, which attracted top players across the country, saw Kampala University’s representatives secure impressive wins and raise the institution’s profile in Uganda’s chess arena.
Wasswa Mark Nyola, a student at the Kampala University Main Campus in Ggaba, finished in second place, earning a silver medal after a brilliant performance among seasoned competitors. His teammate, Arena Candidate Ntumwa Calvin, also representing Kampala University, clinched the U1700 Championship title after scoring 4.5 points out of eight rounds, earning a gold medal in the category.
Speaking after the tournament, Kampala University Chess Coach Mr. Kizza Faruk commended the students for their discipline, resilience, and outstanding display of skill. He praised both Mark and Calvin for “their brilliance and for proudly raising the Kampala University flag high.”
The University continues to strengthen its sports programs, with chess emerging as one of the disciplines highlighting exceptional growth and talent.
