Kampala University Fighters Sweep Victories As MMA Open Sets Stage For Uganda’s Continental Challenge
Kampala University delivered a commanding performance at the Kampala University MMA event on 2 October 2026, with all three of its fighters winning their respective bouts during a competition held to select Uganda’s national team for the GAMMA African MMA Championship in Côte d’Ivoire.
Organized by the Uganda Mixed Martial Arts Federation (UMMAF) and hosted at Kampala University, the event brought together athletes, coaches, referees and judges in a significant showcase of the country’s growing Mixed Martial Arts talent.
Kampala University served as the main sponsor, providing substantial support for the competition, while St. Francis contributed supporting sponsorship. The University’s involvement provided a platform for competitive sport, professional training and the identification of athletes for international representation.

The competition attracted participants from Uganda, Sudan, Kenya and Afghanistan, giving the tournament an international dimension and offering Ugandan fighters valuable opportunities to test their abilities against opponents from different sporting backgrounds.
For the host institution, the outstanding highlight was the unbeaten performance of its three representatives. Their victories added distinction to Kampala University’s role as both sponsor and competitor, demonstrating its contribution to the development of sporting talent.
Beyond the bouts, the programme featured a seminar for referees, judges and coaches, strengthening the technical knowledge needed to support the sport’s development. This combination of training and competition underscored the importance of investing in both athletes and the officials responsible for maintaining standards.
Gold and silver medallists received medals and certificates in recognition of their achievements. Referees, judges and coaches were also awarded certificates for their participation and contribution to the event.
The competition was attended by Kampala University’s Resident Director and Vice-Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, Ms. Rashida Kateregga. Her presence reinforced the institution’s support for sports development and opportunities that enable young athletes to progress to higher levels of competition.
UMMAF President Mr. Titus Tugume called for government support for Mixed Martial Arts, drawing attention to the need for greater backing as Uganda works to strengthen the sport and prepare athletes for international competition.
National team selection was a central purpose of the tournament, linking the competition at Kampala University to Uganda’s preparations for the African championship under GAMMA—the Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts.
With an international field, a technical development seminar and a clean sweep by the host University’s fighters, the Kampala University MMA Open marked an encouraging step in Uganda’s sporting progress. Attention now turns to the national team’s preparations and the opportunity to carry Uganda’s ambitions onto the continental stage in Côte d’Ivoire.
