Kampala University Flags Off 143 Students for the 2024 Eastern Africa University Games in Kenya
Kampala University officially flagged off its sports teams today, December 13, 2024, in preparation for the 13th edition of the Eastern Africa University Games, which are set to take place at Maseno University in Kenya from December 15th to 20th, 2024.
The event was graced by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic, Research, Innovation and Internationalization, Dr. Wardah M Rajab Gyagenda – representing the Vice-Chancellor Owek.Amb.Al-Haj Prof. Badru D. Kateregga, led the ceremony alongside the university stakeholders (the Katereggas). Together, they sent off a group of 143 students, who will represent Kampala University in various sports disciplines at the prestigious regional competition.
In her address, Dr. Wardah expressed her pride in the teams and conveyed her optimism for the upcoming games. "This is an exciting moment for Kampala University, as we send forth our talented students to compete at the 2024 Eastern Africa University Games. We believe in your abilities to excel, not only in sports but also as ambassadors of our university's values," said Dr. Wardah.
She emphasized the significance of the games as an opportunity for the students to showcase their hard work, dedication, and teamwork while also fostering regional unity through sports. Dr. Wardah encouraged the teams to approach the competition with discipline, determination, and sportsmanship, reminding them that their performance would reflect the spirit and commitment of Kampala University.
The Katereggas, known for their active role in supporting university sports and boosting student morale, also joined the ceremony, cheering on the teams and urging them to give their best. The Katereggas are an iconic symbol of student engagement and pride at Kampala University, and their presence further motivated the students ahead of the competition.
The 143 sports students will participate in a wide range of sports, including football, basketball, volleyball, handball, netball, and taekwondo among others, as they compete against universities from across East Africa.
Kampala University is hopeful that their teams will continue to build on previous successes and make their mark at the upcoming games.
The Eastern Africa University Games, held annually, provide an important platform for universities in the region to compete and collaborate. This year's edition at Maseno University in Kenya promises to be an exciting event, with top universities from the region coming together to showcase their sporting talents.
In attendance was the sports tutor, Ms. Martha Soigi, Academic Registrar, Officials from the Finance Department, Dean of Students, Coaches and Captain.
As the teams prepare to depart for Maseno University, the university community wishes them all the best, hoping that they will bring home honors and further solidify Kampala University's position as a powerhouse in regional university sports.
