Kampala University Strengthens Academic Quality Through New Examination Standard-Setting And Moderation Model

Kampala University has taken a significant step towards strengthening the quality, consistency and credibility of its assessment processes through an Examination-Setting and Moderation Workshop held on Thursday, 8 October 2026, at Mutundwe Campus.

The full-day workshop brought together lecturers and academic team leaders from across the University to introduce them to the new examination standard-setting model, formulae, procedures and approaches. The initiative forms part of the University’s ongoing efforts to ensure that examinations are professionally designed, fair, consistent and aligned with expected learning outcomes.

The training was facilitated by Dr. Nsimbi Isaack, Dr. Kiiza Mark and Ms. Zenna, who guided participants through the examination-setting framework and provided practical insights into examination construction, moderation and quality assurance.

Particular attention was given to Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) setting techniques, examination structure, the appropriate distribution of questions and standard-setting procedures. These areas are essential to developing assessments that accurately measure students’ knowledge, understanding and ability to apply what they have learned.

Through the workshop, lecturers strengthened their understanding of how effective examination setting and moderation contribute to credible academic results. The training also provided an opportunity for academic teams to develop a shared understanding of the new model and its application across the University.

The initiative reflects Kampala University’s obligation to continuous improvement in teaching, learning and assessment. By equipping its academic staff with relevant assessment skills, the University continues to uphold academic standards and strengthen confidence in the quality of its qualifications.
