Kampala, Uganda | 12th October 2026
Kampala University has granted permission to host the Uganda Open Kickboxing Tournament, bringing together more than 100 male and female fighters from across the country for a landmark national sporting event at the University’s Ggaba Main Campus on 31st October 2026.
The tournament, organised by the Uganda Kickboxing Promoting Committee (UKBPC), will bring together athletes representing the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), Uganda Police Force, Uganda Prisons and different universities.
The hosting of the tournament reflects Kampala University’s assurance to youth empowerment, talent development, sports promotion and providing opportunities for young people to showcase their abilities beyond the classroom.
According to the Uganda Kickboxing Promoting Committee, the tournament comes at a critical period as kickboxing advances towards full recognition by the National Council of Sports (NCS) as an official national sport. The event is expected to demonstrate the sport’s growing national structure, grassroots participation and organisational capacity.
A Platform for Talent Identification
The tournament will serve as an important platform for grassroots talent identification and scouting, giving emerging kickboxers from different parts of Uganda an opportunity to compete, gain exposure and demonstrate their potential.
In addition to the competitions, the event will contribute to strengthening institutional and corporate partnerships, improving technical officiating standards and developing a unified national ranking system for fighters.
The organisers also expect the tournament to play a role in Uganda’s preparations for upcoming international competitions, including the WAKO All African Games Qualifiers scheduled to take place in Egypt in December 2026.
Kampala University Strengthens its Sports and Youth Development Role
By hosting the national tournament, Kampala University will further strengthen its contribution to the development of sports and youth talent in Uganda.
The event will provide students, staff and members of the wider community with an opportunity to witness high-level kickboxing competition while interacting with athletes, officials and sporting stakeholders from across the country.
The University’s support for the tournament is also expected to enhance partnerships between higher education institutions and national sporting organisations, demonstrating the important role universities can play in promoting talent, discipline, teamwork and healthy lifestyles among young people.
The Chairman of the Uganda Kickboxing Promoting Committee, Shakey Mubiru , expressed appreciation to Kampala University for supporting the initiative and for providing a platform through which Uganda’s emerging kickboxing talent can be showcased.
The tournament is expected to attract athletes, coaches, referees, sports administrators, university representatives and other stakeholders, making Kampala University a focal point for kickboxing and youth talent development on 31st October 2026.
