KTI Chancellor Challenges Graduates To Turn Skills Into Solutions For Uganda’s Development
KYADONDO, 27 AUGUST 2026 — The Chancellor of Kyadondo Technical Institute (KTI), Owek. Al-Haj Prof. Badru Dungu Kateregga who also doubles as the Kampala University founding Vice-Chancellor, has challenged graduates to use their technical skills, knowledge and character to create employment, solve societal challenges and contribute to Uganda’s socio-economic transformation.
Prof. Kateregga made the call on Thursday while presiding over the 5th Graduation Ceremony of Kyadondo Technical Institute, where 241 graduands were awarded qualifications. Of these, 136 were female and 105 were male.
In his first graduation address as Chancellor, Prof. Kateregga described the ceremony as more than a celebration of academic achievement, emphasizing that graduation marks the beginning of a new chapter of responsibility and service.
“An institution of higher and technical education is ultimately judged not simply by the certificates it awards, but by the quality of people it sends into society,” he said.
The Chancellor underscored the strategic importance of technical education to Uganda’s development, noting that the country requires competent technicians, artisans, entrepreneurs, innovators and problem-solvers to drive sectors such as construction, manufacturing, agriculture, ICT, automotive engineering, electrical installation, hospitality and cosmetology.
Prof. Kateregga urged KTI to continue moving beyond simply training students to transforming lives by producing graduates who are competent, disciplined, innovative, ethical and useful to their communities and country.
He also called upon employers, industries, entrepreneurs and development partners to provide graduates with opportunities to apply their skills through employment, industrial training, apprenticeships, innovation and entrepreneurship. He emphasized that stronger collaboration among training institutions, industry, government and communities is essential to producing graduates capable of both securing and creating employment.
The Chancellor further reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the partnership between Kyadondo Technical Institute and Kampala University, particularly in creating academic progression pathways for KTI Diploma graduates to pursue Bachelor’s degrees and enabling staff to further their academic qualifications through postgraduate studies.
He commended the Governing Council, Board of Trustees, Management, Principal and staff for their commitment to the growth of KTI, while recognizing Board Chairman Mr. Asadu Sserwanja and Principal Mr. Deus Kanaaba, both alumni of Kampala University, for their leadership and contribution to the institution.
The ceremony was attended by a delegation from Kampala University, including Resident Director Ms. Rashida Kateregga, Deputy Resident Director Mr. Faquih Muhammed Kateregga, Director of Protocol in the Office of the Vice-Chancellor and University Administrator Ms. Naila Florence, Public Relations Officer Ssekatawa Julius, Dean of Students Mr. Mugalu Augustine, and National Coordinator for Marketing Mr. Busulwa Ronald.
Prof. Kateregga also thanked parents, guardians, spouses and sponsors for their sacrifices and support, noting that the graduates’ success was equally a reflection of their contribution.
Addressing the graduands, the Chancellor urged them to embrace entrepreneurship, lifelong learning, integrity and innovation.
