KU Hospitality Students Turn Classroom Knowledge Into Industry-Ready Skills Through Cbet Practical Training

Kampala University continues to strengthen competency-based learning through practical training designed to equip students with the skills, confidence and professional competencies required to excel in the workplace.

On Sunday, 4 October 2026, Year One, Semester One Weekend students participated in a hands-on practical session in Front Office Operations under the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) approach.

The practical session provided students with an opportunity to move beyond classroom theory and experience key front-office operations within a practical learning environment. The training focused on essential hospitality functions, including welcoming and receiving guests, handling room reservations, guest registration and check-in procedures, room allocation and key control, telephone etiquette and guest messaging, and maintaining accurate room-status records all under the guidance of lecturer Ahimbisibwe Naboth.

Students also gained practical experience in preparing and updating guest folios, responding to guest inquiries and requests, handling complaints professionally, processing billing and payment procedures, and conducting guest check-out and departure procedures.

The practical approach enabled students to demonstrate their understanding of front-office operations while developing critical customer-care, communication, problem-solving and professional conduct skills essential to the hospitality industry.

Through CBET, Kampala University continues to place emphasis on learning that is closely aligned with the demands of the labour market. Such practical sessions provide students with opportunities to demonstrate what they can do, rather than relying solely on theoretical knowledge, thereby strengthening their readiness for employment, entrepreneurship and self-reliance.

The successful practical session was made possible through the continued support of University Management, whose commitment to hands-on training remains instrumental in the implementation of CBET and the development of relevant, industry-oriented skills among students.

Appreciation was also extended to the programme coordinators and students for their cooperation, commitment and thorough preparation, which contributed to the successful completion of the training.

The session reflects Kampala University's continued commitment to practical, competency-based and industry-responsive education, preparing graduates to confidently meet the expectations of employers and contribute meaningfully to the hospitality sector and Uganda's socio-economic development.
