Pepsi University Football League Kicks Off: Kampala University, UMU Share Points in Thrilling Opener
The 13th edition of the Pepsi University Football League got underway in style on Thursday at the newly refurbished Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, with Kampala University (KU) and Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) battling to a goalless draw in the opening fixture.
The high-profile clash attracted a vibrant crowd, with Kampala University’s founding Vice-Chancellor, Owek. Amb. Al-Haj Prof. Badru D. Kateregga, gracing the event as Chief Guest. Accompanied by university stakeholders, staff, and enthusiastic students, Prof. Kateregga took to the pitch before kickoff under tight security to bless the teams - a moment that electrified the stadium.
Despite the absence of goals, the encounter was packed with intensity, tactical discipline, and standout performances. KU’s goalkeeper Wafula David, emerged as the star of the day, producing at least three world-class saves to deny UMU’s attacks and ensuring Coach Vincent Tumusiime’s side earned a crucial point against the title holders.
Speaking after the game, Prof. Kateregga expressed his delight with the spirited display from the KU side:
“I am very happy with the performance of our players. We did not win, but a draw is good because we were playing the defending champions. I think we played well, and now we can focus on beating our other opponents.”
Kampala University once again proven its extraordinary passion for sports by transporting fans from all the five campuses in university buses, filling the stadium with deafening chants and firm support that turned the opener into a true spectacle.
The result leaves Group A wide open, with KU, UMU, and four other universities vying for top honors in what promises to be one of the most competitive editions yet.
Group A Teams:
- Kampala University (KU)
- Uganda Martyrs University (UMU)
- Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST)
- Mountains of the Moon University
- University of Kisubi (UNIK)
- Kampala International University (KIU)
As the league progresses, all eyes will be on Kampala University being one of the region’s sporting giants.
