Zubedah Secures Kampala University Scholarship, Appointed Brand Ambassador by Prof. Kateregga

Kampala, Uganda - Kampala University has awarded a fully funded scholarship to renowned digital content creator Shamim Mayanja, popularly known as Zubedah Byantalo, in a landmark move aimed at strengthening academic grounding and professionalism within Uganda’s rapidly growing creative industry.

The scholarship was granted by the founding Vice-Chancellor of Kampala University, Owek. Amb. Al-haj Prof. Badru D. Kateregga, and will enable Zubedah to pursue a Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication, one of the university’s most hands-on and industry-driven programs. The sponsorship fully covers her tuition and academic requirements throughout the course of study.

Speaking on the decision, Prof. Kateregga explained that although Uganda’s digital content creators are highly talented and influential, many are limited by the lack of structured academic training. He emphasized that as content creation increasingly shapes public opinion, culture, and livelihoods, formal education remains a critical missing link in the industry.

“Academic grounding equips content creators with sharper communication skills, stronger ethics, and greater professionalism,” Prof. Kateregga said. “It also opens doors to wider opportunities beyond social media, allowing creatives to transition seamlessly into mainstream media, leadership, and entrepreneurship.”

Zubedah Byantalo has built a strong following through her relatable, engaging, and socially resonant digital content, earning recognition as one of the emerging voices in Uganda’s online creative space. Upon receiving the scholarship, she expressed heartfelt gratitude, describing the opportunity as a major turning point in both her personal and professional journey.

“This sponsorship is more than a return to school,” Zubedah said. “It is a chance to grow, learn, and expand my impact using the right skills, knowledge, and platforms.”

Kampala University’s Department of Journalism and Mass Communication is widely recognized for its 100 percent hands-on training approach. The department is equipped with an on-air radio station, television studios, production studios, as well as newspaper and magazine platforms-ensuring students graduate with practical, real-world media experience.

In addition to her academic journey, Zubedah has also been appointed as one of Kampala University’s Brand Ambassadors, a role through which she will represent the institution while inspiring young creatives to embrace education alongside talent.
