The Diploma in Education – Religious Studies (DEDRS) prepares students for a wide range of professions with significant social implications. The programme covers the study of Christianity, Islam, and other world religions, fostering research, cultural engagement, and preparing graduates for further theological studies. It also prepares teachers for primary and secondary education institutions.
Objectives
- To equip teacher trainees with knowledge and skills to provide children with insights into the nature of religion.
- To provide awareness of the role religion has played in shaping cultural and social life.
- To enable students to appreciate and understand the rich Islamic and Christian heritage in relation to social and economic history.
- To contribute to the spiritual and moral development of students.
Philosophy
Kampala University is a fountain of knowledge, producing holistic graduates who become vanguards of change. This philosophy is based on the need for graduates who are competitive academically, morally, and socially in the job market.
Learning Outcome
- Analyze the historical and contemporary role of religion in society.

Entry Requirements
- Direct Entry: Two principal passes at A’ Level and at least five passes at O’ Level in one sitting.
- Diploma Entry: A relevant Grade III certificate from a recognized Primary Teachers College with a credit or its equivalent.
- Mature Age Entry: Candidates must be at least 25 years old and have passed a mature age examination from an NCHE-recognized center.
- Higher Education Certificate (HEC): A relevant HEC accredited by NCHE with a distinction or credit.
