Kampala University Vice-Chancellor Challenges New Nursing Cohort to Uphold Professionalism and Compassion
Mutundwe, 18th August 2025 - The Founding Vice-Chancellor of Kampala University, Owek. Amb. Al-Haj. Prof. Badru Dungu Kateregga, officially welcomed new Nursing and Midwifery students to the Kampala University School of Nursing and Health Sciences in a colorful event held at Mutundwe Campus. The ceremony was graced by the Resident Director and Vice-Chairperson Board of Trustees Ms. Rashidah Kateregga, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Dr.Wardah Rajab Gyagenda , University stakeholders, administrators, the Principal Ms. Grace Akwang, staff, student leaders, and friends of the University.
In his address, Prof. Kateregga extended a heartfelt welcome to the new students, thanking them for choosing Kampala University school of Nursing and Health Sciences as their academic home. He reminded them that by joining the nursing and midwifery profession, they had answered a noble call to serve humanity with dignity, compassion, and integrity. “We promise to walk with you, guide you, and equip you with the knowledge, skills, and values you need to thrive,” he assured.
The Vice-Chancellor also applauded continuing students for their loyalty, urging them to be role models to the incoming cohort. In the same spirit, he welcomed the new Campus Administrator, Ms. Irene Nakatudde, and expressed confidence in her ability to strengthen the Mutundwe Complex, which houses the Graduate School, the School of Nursing and Health Sciences, and the In-Service Programme.
Reflecting on the history of the School, Prof. Kateregga narrated how he transformed his former home into the School of Nursing and Health Sciences in 2005, with the vision of producing competent health professionals capable of meeting international standards.
Highlighting achievements, he pointed to infrastructure improvements, advanced laboratory facilities, student participation in medical camps such as the Kabaka Foundation and MUDIWA outreach, timely staff welfare, enhanced discipline, and consistent academic excellence. “We are proud of the progress this School has made in training health professionals of integrity and skill,” he said.
Prof. Kateregga also urged students to uphold discipline, responsibility, and hard work. To the new entrants, he gave valuable advice: develop empathy, uphold honesty, embrace lifelong learning, and serve with dignity.
Concluding his address, the Vice-Chancellor encouraged the students to walk their academic journey with courage, faith, and determination. “Nursing is more than a profession, it is a vocation of sacrifice, patience, and service to humanity,” he said. He called on both new and continuing students to remain focused, disciplined, and dedicated as they contribute to the success story of Kampala University.
