KAMPALA, UGANDA – Kampala University has officially flagged off its distinguished alumnus, Shakey Mubiru, for international training in Thailand ahead of a major global sporting and health advocacy event aimed at raising awareness about sickle cell anaemia.
The send-off ceremony that was led by the Institution’s founding Vice-Chancellor Owek.Amb,Al-haj Prof.Badru D.Kateregga at the main campus in Ggaba, marked a significant milestone for both the University and Mubiru, a graduate of Mass Communication who has risen to prominence as a professional fighter and mentor.
Mubiru is set to headline the international bout at the upcoming event dubbed “A Fight for Awareness, A Run for Life,” scheduled for June 27, 2026, at the Lugogo Hockey Grounds in Kampala. The event will feature a range of sporting disciplines, including kickboxing, boxing, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), and a “Run for Life,” positioning athletics as a powerful platform for social change and health education.
In the headline fight, Mubiru will face Billy Hinch of the United Kingdom’s Lincoln Fight Factory in a highly anticipated Uganda-versus-UK showdown themed “The Blood Run vs. Blood Fights.” The event will also include a high-profile female bout between Uganda Police’s Rebecca Amongi and Caitlin Chapman of the UK’s Combat Academy.

Prof. Kateregga emphasized that the initiative goes beyond sports competition, highlighting its broader role in promoting health awareness, youth engagement, and national development. He added that such platforms also showcase the university’s dedication to holistic student development, blending academics with talent and creativity.
He further urged young athletes to prioritize education alongside their sporting careers, stressing that while talent may have limits, education provides lifelong value and opportunity
