THE ROCK RISES: Uganda’s Male National Netball Team Flagged Off for Historic Debut at Africa Championship

The Uganda Male National Netball Team, famously known as “The Rock,” has been officially flagged off for their first-ever appearance at the Africa Male Netball Championship, scheduled to run from December 8th to 14th, 2025 in Lilongwe, Malawi.

The flag-off ceremony was held at Kampala University Ggaba Main Campus, where the team’s Patron, Chief financer and founding Vice-Chancellor Owek. Amb. Al-Haj Prof. Badru D. Kateregga, was represented by the University’s Sports Tutor, Ms. Martha Soigi. She was accompanied by the Dean of Students, Mr. Mugalu Augustine, the Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ssekatawa Julius, and the Director Operations, Mr. Sharkool Wahab.

Speaking at the event, Ms. Soigi expressed profound gratitude to Prof. Kateregga for his great support, noting that his assurance has consistently propelled the team forward.
“We appreciate his great commitment and for always being there for the team,” she said, recalling that in 2021, Prof. Kateregga singlehandedly funded the team’s travel to South Africa for the International Male Netball Championship.

She wished the team success as they prepare to raise Uganda’s flag in the 2025 continental showpiece.

Netball Uganda Vice President (Technical), Richard Muhumuza, also conveyed confidence in the team’s readiness and potential as they enter the tournament for the first time.
“The team has been well-prepared and is ready to fight. This is our first appearance in this tournament, and we believe they will deliver,” he stated.

Assistant Captain Ssebuliba Mishar echoed this determination, stressing that the squad is not merely aiming to participate but to make a commanding statement.

We are equal to the challenge, and we’re going for the trophy,” he affirmed.

Uganda will be represented by a 15-member contingent, comprising 12 players, Head Coach Jessy Assiimwe, and two officials led by Team Manager Dr. Sarah Nkonge Muwonge.

The country has been placed in Group A alongside South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana, while Group B features Malawi, Eswatini, Kenya, and Namibia.
